Aluminium Foil

Aluminium Foil

The main challenge to recycling aluminium foil is that often is it contaminated with food waste. Grease, oil and food waste can damage recycling equipment and create an inferior recycled end product, so food or grease affected aluminium foil needs to be disposed of in your general waste red or green lidded domestic bin.

You can place clean aluminium foil in your kerbside recycling yellow lidded bin. To recycle aluminium foil rinse off all bits of food waste with hot water and a sponge or in your dishwasher, don’t worry if it discolours from rinsing it in hot water, this is totally normal.  Small pieces of aluminium foil sheets will get stuck in the Resource Recovery Facilities conveyor belt and cause damage to this equipment making our recycling centre very unhappy; save your clean pieces of aluminium foil until you have a few pieces. Once you have enough clean foil crumple it into a ball and once the foil ball has a diameter of 6cm (or the size of a hand fist), you can place the ball in your recycling bin.

Ensure that it is actually aluminium foil by scrunching it up, if it stays scrunched up it is aluminium foil, if it pops back out it is likely to be foil covered plastic which cannot be recycled in your home recycling bin.
