Bottle Tops and Lids (Plastic or Metal)

Small lids and bottle tops, that are loose, should be placed in the red or green lidded rubbish bin. These cannot be processed with other recyclable materials as they are too small and slip through the conveyor belt at our Material Recovery Facility (MRF) and then jam the machinery. This is the same for water bottle, UHF container and milk bottle lids.

If the lids are plastic and smaller than 5cm in diameter collect them in a clear recyclable bottle (e.g. 2 litre juice or milk bottle) until full and then place the filled bottle in your recycling bin to be recycled. For small metal lids, collect these in a coffee tin or another clean metal container until full and then place the metal container in your recycling bin to be recycled.

The not-for-profit group Lids4Kids aim to rescue plastic bottle lids from Landfill and partner with existing plastic recycling companies to make products which benefit kids.  They accept clean plastic lids with the recycling numbers 2 and 4 only which are usually found on lids from milk bottles, soft drink bottles, UHT milk cartons and water bottles.  You are able to find collection sites on their Facebook page “Lids4Kids – Queensland” or maybe ask your local school or Scouts or Girl Guides groups if they are collecting these items.

Single plastic lids are to be placed in your kerbside general waste red or green lidded bin.
