Paint can be stored for up to ten years. Keeping touch-up paint available will help you maintain your building without having to completely repaint.
If you still have large amounts of paint, consider donating it to a community organisation that can use it. See Planet Ark www.recyclingnearyou.com.au for programs and organisation that accept unwanted paint and paint cans in your area.
These items cannot be disposed of at Livingstone Council Waste Facilities but can be taken to the Paintback facility at the Rockhampton Regional Council Landfill site on Lakes Creek Road, Rockhampton. Visit paintback.com.au to see the full range of acceptable and unacceptable products for disposal.
Please be reminded that wet paint should never be placed in household recycling or general waste bins, as it contains harmful chemicals like solvents and metals, which can contaminate groundwater and pose health risks. If you must dispose of paint in your general waste bins, we strongly recommend drying it out first to minimise any environmental impact.
Here’s how to safely dry out leftover paint:
- Fill the paint tin with materials such as kitty litter or sawdust.
- Place the tin in a sunny spot to allow the paint to harden.
