1. Identifying recyclable items around the house is easy if you remember that if it is made from paper, cardboard, firm plastic, metal (aluminium and steel) or glass, it can be recycled. 2. You can safely dispose of all empty aerosol cans and containers in your recycling bin. 3. If you’re unsure about “ruining the load” of the recyclables. Do your best to decide if an item can be recycled but “if in doubt, check it out” on the A-Z list at the bottom left hand side of your screen. 4. Make collecting your recyclables at home easier by placing a bin for recyclables in your kitchen, bathroom and laundry. Sorting your recyclables at the point of disposal will help you to recycle more. 5. Rinse your containers before placing in your recycling bin. As it can get quite hot here in CQ, rinsing reduces odours and therefore minimises smells in your recycling bin. Remember, your recyclables get sorted by hand at the recycling facility (MRF). Be considerate of their health. 6. Do NOT put your recyclables in plastic bags. Instead put the items loose in your recycling bin. Plastic bags cannot be opened at the recycling facility (MRF) for safety reasons, so all the items inside are sent to Landfill. 7. Remember that every little bit counts. Even making the effort to recycle one or two extra items each week, such as the junk mail from the letterbox or the empty air freshener can from the upstairs bathroom, helps to conserve precious resources from going to Landfill. 8. Please remove all lids from containers and bottles before placing them in the recycling bin. Put the lids in your general waste bin and recycle the container. 9. Only glass jars and bottles are suitable for recycling. Drinking glasses, ceramics and heat-proof glass (e.g. Pyrex) melts at a different temperature and cannot be recycled. Please put heat-proof glass in your general waste bin.
Containers for Change Containers for Change is a Queensland Government container refund scheme that gives people an incentive to collect and return containers for recycling, in exchange for a 10-cent refund payment on drink containers (150ml to three litres). Where to drop off containers? A list of the proposed refund collection points is available on the Containers for Change website [https://www.containersforchange.com.au/qld/]. Council’s waste facilities do not provide refunds for containers, although residents may still drop them there for recycling. Residents can also continue to place their drink containers in their recycling bin at home. Council will use any refunds collected to offset the cost of providing the Shire’s waste management services. Collecting containers Council encourages litter prevention in the Livingstone Shire to keep our area clean, green and sustainable. For health and safety reasons, people should not go through bins to take items out of the bins.
Sorting your waste will enable you to more easily use our free recycling areas at each Waste Facility and to reduce your waste disposal charges. Disposal of items in new or good condition, that can be resold through the Yeppoon Reuse Market located at the Yeppoon Landfill, is free of charge (only if accepted by the Yeppoon Reuse Market staff). * Save money – the more we can recover, the less you’ll pay. * Save time – quickly unload different materials at the various designated collection points. * Save our environment – keep waste out of the Landfill.
